Claw Setting

Claw Set Engagement RingClaw Setting

Claw or prong settings are a very popular style for engagement rings, whereby the diamond or coloured gemstone is secured by a number of fine 'claws' of metal. Typically there are either four or six claws, spaced evenly around the stone, though two, three and five claw designs are not uncommon.

The number, shape, size and orientation of the claws can have a pronounced aesthetic effect on the claw set engagement rings, as well as the structural strength of the setting.

In general, claw setting put the emphasis on the diamond and not the metal supporting it. Of all diamond settings, the claw setting allows the most light into the stone. Claw set engagement rings tend to hold the stone relatively high off the finger, which also helps make the gem look particularity prominent, and often have only minimal metal showing.

If you're looking to 'show off' the stone, then a claw set engagement ring is ideal.
