What are blood or conflict diamonds?

'Blood' diamonds are mined in war zones and sold to fund military activity. These gemstones end up in jewellers' shops across Europe and America. In 2002, the US General Accounting Office (GAO) noted that diamonds " are a high-value commodity that are easily concealed and transported. These conditions allow diamonds to be used in lieu of currency in arms deals, money laundering and crime. Lack of transparency in industry operations also facilitates illegal activity."
