What's the Kimberley Process and how well does it work?

The Kimberley Process is a certification scheme established in 2003, with the aim of preventing conflict diamonds from entering the market. It is often cited by jewellers as proof that their diamonds are conflict-free, but unfortunately the Kimberley Process if flawed. According to Global Witness, "diamonds mined in West Africa are regularly smuggled and given Kimberley Process certificates by countries other than their country of origin... there are serious loopholes in the Kimberley Process."
