What's wrong with most gold jewellery?

Most gold is extracted using mercury or cyanide, both highly toxic substances which can remain in the environment long after the gold has been removed. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has estimated that small-scale gold mining releases up to 1,000 metric tons of mercury per year.
