Marquise Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

Marquise cut diamonds make for very elegant engagement rings as they tend to be flattering to the hand, making fingers look longer and more slender.
The marquise cut, which is also known as the 'navette cut', is a brilliant cut diamond that viewed from above looks a little like an oval that has been stretched out to a point at each end. Like all brilliant cuts, marquise cut diamonds have a total of 58 facets, designed to optimise the natural life (sparkle), fire (refraction) and brilliance (reflection) of each diamond.
Allegedly inspired by the striking smile of the Marquise de Pompadour, King Louis XV’s mistress, marquise cut diamonds are generally considered to have ideal proportions when the the length of the diamond is approximately twice its width. Of course, this is to a large degree a matter of personal preference, and more slender or more stout proportions may be preferable for a particular engagement ring design. Whichever proportions you prefer, you should always look for good symmetry as this ensures that light is reflected evenly, especially in the point.
