Pavé Setting

Pavé setting covers the surface of a piece of jewellery with lots of small diamonds (pavé being French for paved), and pavé set engagement rings can look absolutely stunning.
Pavé setting starts with rows of small holes being drilled out of the metal, and a tiny diamond being placed into each hole. These holes are arranged in such a way that the diamonds fill as much of the surface as possible without actually touching. Once a diamond is positioned in its hole, tiny 'beads' of precious metal are pulled up from the surface and pushed over the edge of the stone to hold it in place.
Much of the cost of a pavé set engagement ring is in the setting of the diamonds, so this is often more a determinant of the price than the cost of the diamonds and the precious metal. As such, to evaluate a pavé set engagement ring, it is particularly important to look at the overall quality of the craftsmanship.
