The surprising lessons these celeb LGBT weddings taught us

Following a month long celebration of LGBT Pride, and the London Pride parade due to take place this Saturday on July 6th, sustainable fine jewellery brand Ingle & Rhode are looking at some of the best LGBT celebrity weddings of years gone by; and how we can look to replicate them in 2019.

The brand’s co-founder, David Rhode, said:

“As London Pride enters full swing, we wanted to celebrate some of the most beautiful LGBT Weddings of the last few years, and what they’ve taught us about how to plan and execute a brilliant wedding.

“From beautiful bespoke rings and designer dresses, to intimate family affairs and celebrity guest lists, these famous faces certainly had some beautiful and memorable weddings, that could provide brides and grooms-to-be with some serious inspiration.”

Sir Elton John and David Furnish
Although Sir Elton John and David Furnish became civil partners in 2005, they were not permitted to marry until 2014. Following the legalisation of same-sex marriage in England and Wales, the couple wed.

Joined by a number of famous faces including the Beckhams, Ed Sheeran and Hugh Grant, the wedding took place at their Windsor Estate in Berkshire. It was a truly romantic event, with beautiful red roses strewn throughout the wedding: a symbol of luck that were also present at their civil partnership nine years previous.

David said: “Using seasonal flowers is a great way to make your wedding look beautiful, whilst avoiding any non-biodegradable decorations that will end up in landfill.”

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli
Actress Samira Wiley – most well known for her roles in Orange is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale – and writer Lauren Morelli tied the knot in 2017. The event took place in sunny Palm Springs, California.

Striving for a relaxed and fun atmosphere, the wedding was comprised of lots of dancing and funfetti cake.

Both women stunned in designer gowns created by Christian Siriano; a designer who famously partnered with Red Carpet Green Dress to produce a sustainable gown for Danielle Macdonald at the Oscars this year.

David said: “13 pounds of confetti showered guests throughout the night at this wedding – head to Etsy for a more sustainable alternative in the form of biodegradable confetti.”

Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black
After four years together, British diver Tom Daley and American screenwriter, director and producer, Dustin Lance Black, wed in 2017.

The wedding took place in Bovey Castle, Devon. As the name suggests, this is an extraordinarily grand castle situated in the grounds of a national park, with a ceremony and reception to match the surroundings. Daley and Black ended their special day with a fireworks display!

David said: “Getting married in the country where lots of your guests live is always a good idea, as it avoids the environmental and financial cost of travelling overseas.”

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
Ellen proposed to Portia with a beautiful bespoke 3-carat diamond ring back in 2008, and last year the pair celebrated their 10-Year Wedding Anniversary. Their wedding took place following the overturning of the same-sex marriage ban in California.

A stunning affair, the event was relatively small and took place at the couple’s home in Beverly Hills.

David said: “Both Ellen and Portia are vegan, so they opted for a vegan wedding breakfast and cake for guests to enjoy. Serving vegan or vegetarian food at your wedding is a great way to promote an eco-friendly diet, and will make your event more sustainable.”

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
Actors Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka married in Perugia, Italy, after ten years together. They honeymooned in Spain.

An intimate wedding, with around forty-five guests, the day was centred around family, with the couples’ parents, siblings, and their twins in attendance.

It was a wedding filled with food and music, with a performance by Sir Elton John. Heavenly!

David said: “If you are getting married abroad, try and bring in staff, catering and entertainment from the local area. It helps support local businesses and artists, and avoids unnecessary travel.”

Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni
Following eight years together, the Sex and the City star married her partner Christine Marinoni in 2012. The wedding took place in their home city, New York, and Nixon wore a beautiful custom Carolina Herrara dress in pale green.

David said: “Lots of people love the idea of investing in a custom dress for their wedding day; but if this is what you’re going to do, it’s always a good idea to make like Cynthia and opt for something a little less ‘bridal’ that you could wear again, for example in a non-traditional colour. You could also look at selling or renting out your gown after you’ve worn it, thereby contributing to the circular economy.

Cynthia is a huge inspiration for both LGBT and environmental issues. She’s a huge advocate for sustainability, having gone hard on Climate change in her campaign to become New York Governor last year.”
