“LUCKILY SHE SAID YES, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN AWKWARD FLIGHT OTHERWISE!”
I chose Ingle & Rhode for my now wife’s engagement ring as I was looking for an ethical jeweller and I saw the brand featured in a news story. It was important to me to know that nobody had suffered in the creation of the ring, I knew it would be important to my future wife as well.
I met David Rhode and adapted a design for a ring from one featured on your website. I used sapphires along with the diamond as sapphire is my wife’s birth stone and there were sapphires in the first piece of jewellery (a necklace) that I had bought for her. David and the team took plenty of time ensuring the design was right, gave me plenty of information and insight and was extremely helpful throughout the whole process.
My wife and I met on Tinder (it was much more respectable back in 2013!) when she moved from America to London for work. This led me to planning a proposal for a flight from London to Chicago in an attempt to capture something of the transatlantic nature of our relationship.
“I GOT DOWN ON ONE KNEE NEXT TO THE EMERGENCY EXIT”
When I’d met David he had given me some tips on getting the ring through security and not tipping off Allison in the process, after that I kept it in the box in my pocket ready for the flight. We had bulk head seats so it was just the two of us with plenty of floor space around and the flight was only half full. We’d been in the air for about an hour, I’d thought about doing it at the mid-point of the flight, but realised I couldn’t handle the stress of waiting.
Eventually I got down on one knee next to the emergency exit, Allison had wondered if I’d propose on the trip but doing it on the flight took her by complete surprise. Luckily she said yes, it would have been an awkward flight otherwise!
The crew had no idea and when they came around asking if anyone would like refreshments, Allison asked for some bubbles as “we just got engaged”. The stewardess dashed off and they returned with a tray made up of love heart sweets, chocolates and bottles of champagne. Throughout the flight all the staff came over to congratulate us and look at the ring.
Towards the end of the flight the head stewardess asked me exactly when I proposed, and after speaking with the captain, one of the officers presented us with a bottle of champagne and the flight map with the time of proposal circled just south of Iceland.
