Advantages of oval cut diamond rings
With a distinctive and elegant look that works equally well in both modern and vintage designs, we have seen a huge increase in interest in oval cut diamond engagement rings in recent years. And while exuding timeless elegance, they also offer some important advantages:
- Brilliance and fire: The modern oval cut diamond features 57 or 58 facets (depending on whether the very bottom of the stone, the culet, is pointed or faceted), generating brilliance and fire that is comparable to that of round brilliant cut diamonds.
- Appearance of size: Oval cut diamonds tend to look larger from above than round diamonds of the same carat weight.
- Flattering to the finger: The elongated shape of the oval has a flattering effect on the hand, making fingers appear longer and more slender.
- Considerations when choosing an oval diamond ring
How to choose an oval diamond engagement ring
When choosing an oval diamond engagement ring, here are the key things to look out for:
- Proportions: the ideal proportions of an oval diamond are generally considered to be when the length of the stone is between 1.3 and 1.5 times its width. While to some degree this is simply a matter of personal preference, ovals with a length-to-width ratio greater than 1.5 are more likely to exhibit a more pronounced ‘bowtie effect’ (see below)
Bowtie effect: like some other elongated diamond shapes (marquise and pear cuts for example), the oval cut can exhibit a shadowy area in the shape of a bowtie running across the centre of the stone when viewed from above. While virtually all oval diamonds have some degree of a bowtie, the visibility and prominence can vary, so be sure to check for this when choosing an oval engagement ring. - Cut: As there isn’t a consensus as to the optimal proportions for an oval diamond, a gemological certificate won’t normally include a cut grade, but there are a couple of things to look out for. Firstly, you should insist on very good or excellent symmetry and polish grades; and secondly, for optimal light performance, you should look for a table percentage between 52% and 64% and a depth percentage between 57% and 65%.
- Settings: Oval diamonds look great in a wide range of settings, from simple solitaires through to ornate vintage-inspired designs. Ultimately, the best setting for you or your partner depends on personal taste and lifestyle, but always choose an engagement ring that will stand up well to a lifetime of daily wear. While extremely delicate bands and prongs may appeal visually, these reduce a ring's ability to withstand wear and tear and increase the risk of the diamond coming loose in the setting.
