The Overall Winner: Angela Gillies

We're delighted to be able to announce that Angela Gillies, an undergraduate at the University of Dundee, was picked as the overall winner of the inaugural Fairtrade Gold Design Awards, after competing against more than 100 budding designers and impressing our panel of judges, with her beautiful design for a diamond ring in Fairtrade white gold, entitled Nestled.

Angela has won £500 and an exciting work experience placement with Vipa Designs and Ingle & Rhode, who will now be transforming her design into a stunning piece of jewellery made from Fairtrade gold and set with an ethically-produced Canadian diamond. The finished piece will be loaned to Angela to exhibit at her end of year show, before being auctioned this summer to raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation.

Highly Commended Designs

In addition to picking Angela as the overall winner, the judging panel (composed of representatives from Ingle & Rhode, The Fairtrade Foundation, The Goldsmiths' Company, Vipa Designs, and journalist Rachael Taylor) also selected three highly commended designs:

• Apprentices & Students in Further Education: Eva Reyburn (The British Academy of Jewellery)
• Undergraduates: Lucy Cormack (University of Dundee)
• Postgraduates & Early Careers: Karen Westland (Graduate of The Glasgow School of Art)

In addition, a public vote held online, identified the following as the most popular designers in each category:
• Apprentices & Students in Further Education: Tommaso Iaquinta (British Academy of Jewellery)
• Undergraduates: Maggie Lin Jung-Hsuan (Birmingham City University)
• Postgraduates & Early Careers: Natalia Antunovity

"We set up these awards up to raise awareness of Fairtrade gold amongst young designers, the future of our industry, and to give them a platform to showcase their talent. And the talent we have seen during these awards has been outstanding and we want to thank everybody who submitted a design. And of course, huge congratulations to Angela. She is a very deserving winner!”
